If you'd like to get involved .... get in touch!

Getting involved in planning and running a film show is a great way to learn new skills, connect with your local community and meet new people. There's lots to do to plan the films as well as helping out on film nights. So if you fancy having a go, click on the link and get in touch.

Budding film buff? We're always looking for new ideas of films to show whether they are classic oldies, art-house, foreign language, have a local connection or mainstream films that some of us still didn't get to see. Send us your ideas.

Artistic talents? Use your creativity to design posters, flyers and other eye catching ways to promote and publicise our films.

The perfect host? Come along and help at one of the shows - sell tickets on the door, get everyone seated, introduce the film, then its lights ...... camera ....... action!

Want to have a go at projecting? Learn how to set up our own equipment and make sure that on the night everyone has great sound and vision.

A whizz at the web? Help us keep our website up to date and get us chatting through Facebook and Twitter.

  About Us

North Berwick Movies is a voluntary organisation bringing the cinema back to our local community. We are pleased to announce our move in May 2019 to a new venue at the North Berwick Community Centre, 8 Law Road, after many successful years at the Freemasons Hall. Currently we show a film on the 3rd Saturday of each month starting at 7.30 pm. Some films are also shown as matinees at 4 pm.

There is no membership fee and films are open to all (subject to age-related film classifications). Tickets are available about two weeks in advance from Rock & Bird, 64 High Street in North Berwick: Adults £5, under-18s £3. Any remaining tickets can be purchased at the cinema door about 20 minutes before the film begins. Beverages from the bar are offered from 7.00 pm.

If you would like to get information about our future films, then please click on the link below to subscribe to the mailing list. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

North Berwick Movies is run by a small committee. We’d love to hear from anyone who wishes to get involved either with planning and organising the shows, or behind the scenes on film night. It’s always entertaining and a great way of meeting new people too!

  Our History

Founded in 2000 as North Berwick Cinema Club, our aim was to bring the cinema back to North Berwick after the closure of the town’s last cinema, The Playhouse, in 1984. Since then we have shown over 200 films including main stream blockbusters, some of the classics, foreign language films, animations and local Scottish films.

National Lottery’s Awards for All helped us to buy our original kit: digital projector, 12ft wide screen, DVD player and sound equipment. With this, NB Movies embraced the opportunity to show films at a wide range of venues in our community to support other local interest groups and to help with charity fundraising for the RNLI, Music Therapy Group and the Youth Café to name just a few. Working with the Youth Café we also helped to get grants to refurbish one of our former venues – the Hope Rooms – which now has in-built projection and sound equipment.

NB Movies more recently made a major investment towards improving the standard of our screenings. We installed a 4.5m screen at the Freemasons Hall, purchased a Full HD projector and Blu-Ray player to enable HD screening and last year added new High Fidelity sound equipment with the help of Audio Light Systems Ltd.  We also installed a hearing loop thanks to a grant from the Stella Moffat Trust. Our audiences have been appreciating the improved cinema quality sound and projection systems that are now in place!

To date, we have staged three major outdoor events which attracted audiences of over 1,000 people. Our Bollywood night, teaming up with the local Indian community who cooked us a fabulous supper, was another highlight. Also, working with Transition North Berwick, NB Movies helped to promote environmental awareness with a short festival of beautiful and thought-provoking films. In August 2018, we hosted a Mini International Film Festival at the Freemasons Hall as part of North Berwick's Fringe by the Sea. This is an event we hope to repeat in future years! Also, following the successful screening of the 'Phantom of the Opera' silent movie with organ accompaniment in 2017, we repeated this experience with the 1923 silent movie ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ on 2nd November 2018 in St Baldred's Church, North Berwick; donations went to the Organ Fund with refreshments afterwards.
